THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF UTAH - DOGS IN A PHOTOBOOTH

the humane society of utah recently enlisted photographer guinnevere shuster to come up with a creative and playful way to show the unique personalities of their adoptable dogs. in order to most closely capture the quirky character of each breed, shuster snapped photo booth portraits of each pooch in various positions and poses — blankly staring at the camera, shyly looking to the side or mid-bite. the square format photos of each dog, featured on the facebook of the humane society of utah, is coupled with a short description and details about their age and size for potential adopters.

PORTRAITS FROM ABOVE

Hong Kong's Informal Rooftop Communities

In South America the slums are attached to the outskirts of mega-cities such as Caracas and Mexico City like wasps’ nests on a cliff face. In a hilly island city like Hong Kong, however, living space is limited. Here you only see the laboriously constructed huts made of corrugated iron and planks of wood in which the poorest of the poor live if you look upwards – they occupy, to put it in cynical terms, a penthouse location.
Self-built settlements on the roofs of high-rise buildings have been an integral part of Hong Kong’s history for over half a century. Rooftop structures range from basic shelters for the disadvantaged to intricate multi-storey constructions equipped with the amenities of modern life.

WONDERFULLY SURREAL by Alain Delorme

Looking very much like photo-realistic paintings, these are actually photographs from the brilliantly talented Parisian, Alain Delorme… whether these are elegantly photoshopped or have been rather impressively staged, the one thing that’s a dead-cert is that their alluring beauty is wonderfully mystifying. Evolving from the photographer’s fascination with Chinese workers and their uneasily stacked delivery bikes, this magical collection of images from Shanghai is currently showing at Paris’ Magda Danysz gallery, running until the 25th of this month…

THE ART OF CLEAN UP by Ursus Wehrli

Ursus Wehrli is a Swiss artist made famous by his Tidying Up Art books that re-arrange famous works of art into tidy sets of painting components that feel like infographics dedicated to how art is created. I love the direction of his new bookThe Art of Clean Up as Ursus organizes common objects or everyday scenes into orderly parts and colour palettes. Have you ever looked at pine branches or alphabet soup in such a fascinating way? I have always stared at parking lots and thought about the colour order that could be created so I love how Ursus made a scene of colour theory out of such an everyday place. The book comes out next month and I can’t wait to see what other things have been “tidied” by Ursus’ clever mind. Organizing never looked so good…
